Escape room games are the purest Flash genre: a locked room drawn in a few frames, a mouse cursor and the slow realisation that the drawer you ignored ten minutes ago holds the key. The genre took off in 2004 with Crimson Room by Toshimitsu Takagi, followed by his Viridian Room. Within a couple of years, "escape the room" was its own category on every games portal.

This box keeps the escape games people still come looking for, plus the point-and-click mysteries that grew out of them. Everything is played with the mouse alone.

The great escape series

  • Submachine by Mateusz Skutnik is the genre's epic: ten numbered games, from The Basement in 2005 to The Exit in 2015, linked by a strange machine-world and a story you piece together from notes.
  • Cube Escape by Rusty Lake is the newer, darker wave: short, unsettling rooms that all connect to the same mysterious lake.
  • The Miller Estate episodes and La Foire aux Mystères are classic multi-part mysteries, best played in order.

Not just rooms

Some of the best games here twist the formula. In Haunt the House you are the ghost, possessing furniture to scare the guests out. Dr. Stanley's House is a puzzle-box house full of mechanisms, and The Visitor is a darkly funny point-and-click in which you are the monster.

Tips for escape games

Hover slowly – many objects only reveal themselves under the cursor. Check every item in your inventory twice, combine things that seem unrelated, and write down any number or symbol you see. When you are truly stuck, each game page has hints that start with a gentle nudge and only give the full answer at the end.
