About Submachine 2: The Lighthouse

Submachine 2: The Lighthouse is episode 2 of the Submachine series by Mateusz Skutnik, released in 2006. Like the rest of the saga, it is a point-and-click exploration game: you move through quiet, strange spaces, pick up objects, use them on machinery and slowly decode the clues left behind.

The second episode leaves the basement behind for a lighthouse standing by the sea. It is still a compact escape game, but the setting opens up, and the notes and symbols you find begin to point beyond a single building.

The series' atmosphere is what people remember most – soft ambient sound, hand-made textures, and the constant feeling that you are only seeing a small part of something enormous. Notes found along the way tell a story across all ten episodes.

How to play

  • Click the arrows at the edges of the screen to move.
  • Click objects to pick them up or interact.
  • Use items from the inventory on the world.

The game is played with the mouse only.

The series in order

Before this, play Submachine 1: The Basement; next comes Submachine 3: The Loop. The Submachine page lists all ten, and FlashAttic marks the episodes you have already played.

Stuck? Hints, gentlest first

Hint 1 – map the world

Submachine locations connect in ways that are easy to forget. Sketch a rough map of where each exit leads.

Hint 2 – keep a notebook

Codes, symbols and coordinates found in one place are used somewhere else. Write down everything that looks deliberate.

Hint 3 – revisit with new items

When you pick up something new, walk back through the places you have already seen – the item usually belongs somewhere you passed.
