Age of War
From cavemen to the future, one lane at a time.

About Age of War
Age of War is a 2007 strategy game by Max Games. Two bases stand at either end of a single field, and the goal is to destroy the enemy base before it destroys yours. You do it by training units that march across the field and fight automatically, and by building turrets on your base to defend it.
The twist is in the name: your side evolves through history. You begin in the Stone Age with club-wielding cavemen and slingshots. As your units fight, you earn experience, and once you have enough you can advance to the next age – medieval knights, then the Renaissance, then the modern age with tanks and machine guns, and finally a futuristic age. Every age brings new units, new turrets and a new special attack. The enemy evolves too, so falling an age behind is the quickest way to lose.
How to play Age of War
- Train units with the unit buttons at the top of the screen; they cost gold and walk towards the enemy on their own.
- Build turrets on your base to shoot at incoming enemies. You can add turret slots and sell old turrets.
- Evolve when you have enough experience to unlock the next age.
- Special attack: each age has one, with a long cooldown.
The whole game is played with the mouse.
Why it is still fun
Age of War is easy to learn and full of small decisions: save or spend, attack or defend, evolve now or wait. For more battles, try Miragine War or the rest of the strategy & defense box.
Stuck? Hints, gentlest first
Hint 1 – turret early
A cheap turret on your base in the first minute stops the early rush and lets you save for units. Don't spend everything on soldiers.
Hint 2 – evolve at the right time
Evolving to the next age costs experience, not gold. Keep a steady stream of units fighting to earn experience, and evolve as soon as the button lights up – being one age ahead wins most battles.
Hint 3 – save the special
Each age has a special attack with a long cooldown. Keep it for the moment the enemy sends a big wave, not the first unit you see.
Age of War was released in 2007 by Max Games and became one of the most played strategy games on the web. Its idea – a whole history of warfare compressed into one battlefield – was easy to understand in seconds, and the jump from cavemen with clubs to soldiers with guns was a genuine "whoa" moment on the school computer.
It was followed years later by Age of War 2.
